Tally provides hundreds of reports with diverse configuration optionns . Still ,you may need special reports from time to time . For example , at year end you may like to get schedule vi and particulars of employees u/s 217 to append with annual report address book of custmors to stay in touch or mailing labels to send greetings card ,new price lists or offer for sale . If you are an exporter , you may need to create export documentation .
Tally captures all the information related to your business . There are many situations when you would like to get the information presented in a different format or with some additional input . With tally , you can overcome the situation considerably as you can plug some tally data to formats created by you ,in odbc compliant application like ms word , or ms excel , plug tally data fields to pull data real time from live tally database to create your own updated report.
What is odbc
The full form of odbc is open data base connectivity. It is a standard programming language interface used to connet to data source . you install odbc drivers for various databases that enables you to cnnect to databases and access their data.
With tally , you get tally odbc driver that lets you to connect to the tally data on installing the odbc driver. THis open architecture allows you to use power of odbc to access data from tally into any odbc compliant software like ms word , ms excel , oracle , ms foxpro , ms sql , ms visual basic , db2 etc , to create any report in those application , in your own format.
For example , a company is maintaining its accounts in tally . At the month end a number of management information system reports are to be created in a specific format . Prior to tally 6.3 users would export data from tally , import into another system and then create the report , which was full of hassles. many users would print to file the report ,open with word processor or spreadsheet , modify it and then print . By connecting through tally odbc , users can directly open the tally database in word or excel , plug tally data , place field labels , create formats as per requirment . Once a format is created , you would get latest data pulled from tally . Suppose you created address book for your custmors plugging relevant ledger fields , next whenever you create new ledgers for custmors , you would get his details in the report .
